This is the set of all possible outcomes.
-
Example
-
The sample space for a standard die is {1,2,3,4,5,6}
-
In connection with the sample space, one often talks about
-
“A uniform sample space”, where all outcomes have the same probability
-
Example: a standard die with 6 equally sized faces.
-
“A non-uniform sample space”, where the outcomes do not have the same probability.
-
Example: “Winning the lottery” or “Not winning the lottery”. The probability of “not winning” is much greater than the probability of “winning”.
-
The “non-uniform sample space” is more difficult to calculate with.
