Sample space

This is the set of all possible outcomes.

  • Example
    • The sample space for a standard die is {1,2,3,4,5,6}
  • In connection with the sample space, one often talks about
    • “A uniform sample space”, where all outcomes have the same probability
      • Example: a standard die with 6 equally sized faces.
    • “A non-uniform sample space”, where the outcomes do not have the same probability.
      • Example: “Winning the lottery” or “Not winning the lottery”. The probability of “not winning” is much greater than the probability of “winning”.
    • The “non-uniform sample space” is more difficult to calculate with.
