Mean
The mean, or average, is the value obtained by adding all observations together and dividing this total by the number of observations.
If we imagine that we have positioned the knife at the correct height and have calculated the correct average, the amount of space above the knife to the heads of the first students will equal the amount that we have cut off from the last students.
